产生与发展
古代文献中有不少关于婚姻家庭的论述。罗马历史学家塔西特斯在其著作中谈论过野蛮人的家庭。雅典人的演说和荷马的史诗也对家庭作过描绘。中国先秦时期的《诗经》中有不少关于家庭的描述。但是，把家庭作为一门学科来研究是在19世纪以后。19世纪初，随着工业化、都市化的加速，家庭的功能、结构和观念发生了变化，引起了所谓“家庭危机”，导致人们进一步探讨家庭消费、家庭管理、创建家政学。19世纪40年代有关家政学的著作开始在美国问世，阐述了有关家庭预算、子女教育方面的知识。随后，美国在学校中开设家政学课程，成立家政学会。
19世纪中叶,社会学学科形成,促进了对家庭研究的学科化。家庭社会学很快就成为社会学的一个分支。一般认为，法国早期社会学家F.勒普累和德国社会学家W.H.里尔是家庭社会学的奠基人。勒普累在A.孔德的影响下，对欧洲矿工及其他工人的家庭进行实地调查，发表了《欧洲工人》(1855)和《家庭组织》(1875)两部著作。他对家庭的经济生活作了剖析，所采用的访问法、问卷法，以及家庭经济分析技术等，至今仍应用于家庭研究和整个社会学研究之中。里尔于1855年出版《家庭》一书。他通过观察和询问，指出家庭出现了危机，主张改革家庭，重建家庭。
家庭社会学的发展大体经历了3个阶段:①19世纪中期至20世纪初期，偏重于家庭演化理论的研究。1858年达尔文的《物种起源》一书问世，启发家庭社会学者探讨家庭的起源和演化。1861年，瑞士法理学家和人类学家J.J.巴霍芬出版了《母权论》；1865年，英国律师和人种学家J.F.麦克伦南发表了《原始婚姻》；1870年美国人类学家L.H.摩尔根出版了《古代社会》。这些著作论述了母系社会与父系社会的存在与发展、婚姻与家庭形态的历史演变,指出家庭作为一个能动的因素,经历了由群婚、对偶婚、专偶婚到一夫一妻制等几个阶段。K.马克思在1880～1881年间对《古代社会》一书作了详细摘要，并写了批语。1884年F.恩格斯根据摩尔根这部书中的某些结论和实际材料，以及马克思的批语，写成了《家庭、私制和国家的起源》。恩格斯把家庭制度与社会制度统一起来考虑，阐明了不同社会经济形态中家庭关系发展的特点,并对家庭的未来作了预测。此外,对家庭问题还提出过许多不同看法：有人认为一夫一妻制就是人类最古老的家庭形式，无所谓群婚存在；有人认为在父权之前有个母权是不真实的，父权才是原初的。 ②20世纪初至50年代，从注重家庭历史的研究转向对家庭现状的研究。20世纪初，随着社会生产力的发展，社会流动加速，人际交往频繁，妇女就业率上升，离婚率增高，出生率下降，于是社会学界着重探讨家庭结构、家庭规模、家庭危机等问题。这一阶段的代表人物有西方现代家庭社会学的开创者E.W.伯吉、T.帕森斯、G.P.默多克等人。1926年伯吉斯首先提出：“家庭是相互作用的人格统一体”。帕森斯认为，家庭的结构和功能对社会结构有重要影响，并指出工业化对家庭结构所产生的影响。默多克通过对家庭的抽样调查，首次提出了核心家庭的概念。从研究方法看，这一阶段家庭社会学的特点，一是注重微观的经验研究，二是引进了心理学的研究方法。
③20世纪50年代以后，家庭社会学的研究从微观转向宏观。第二次世界大战以后，世界各国的社会结构都发生了变化。反映在家庭问题上是家庭结构趋于多样化，家庭功能有的在强化、有的在淡化。这些变化不仅引起社会学，也引起哲学、史学、经济学等各界学者的注意，推动家庭社会学向应用科学的方向发展。美国第39届总统J.卡特为解决家庭中出现的诸如虐待、自杀、非婚生子等问题，曾组织力量进行讨论。苏联在恢复社会学研究以后，家庭社会学也日趋活跃，各界学者就离婚问题、家庭解体问题、闲暇时间问题、犯罪问题分别发表了许多见解。研究方法上的多学科、多层次，研究内容上的面向未来，是这一时期家庭社会学研究的显著特点。
研究的内容
有的学者认为家庭社会学研究家庭的各个方面；有的学者认为研究有关家庭的所有侧面是家庭学的任务，家庭社会学应侧重于家庭的社会方面；还有不少学者把家庭社会学视作社会学关于小群体研究的一个基本组成部分。对于家庭社会学研究的基本内容大体可以概括为以下几点。

辛亥革命时,秋瑾等提出过“家庭革命”的口号。1919年五四运动前后，家庭社会学开始进入中国高等学校的课堂。李大钊、陈独秀、毛泽东、瞿秋白、鲁迅、向警予等都曾就家庭理论问题发表过文章，抨击封建家庭观念。在30年代，社会学家孙本文、李景汉、言心哲、潘光旦等对家庭社会学的研究都作出过贡献。40年代，费孝通出版了《生育制度》，代表了当时中国家庭社会学研究的水平。1930～1948年，中国社会学界共举行过 9届社会学大会，每届议题都讨论到家庭问题。1932年在北京举行的第 2届社会学大会，则以婚姻家庭理论为中心。1950年中华人民共和国婚姻法颁布以后，探讨家庭理论的文章激增。随着社会学在中国的重建，家庭社会学的研究与教学也在中国逐步恢复。1981年10月，中国婚姻家庭研究会在北京成立。1983年出版了中国重建社会学后的第一本家庭社会学专集。从此,有关家庭问题的报刊、书籍猛增。1981年以后,对城乡家庭的调查在许多省市展开。1982年中国社会学工作者对北京、天津、上海、南京、成都等5大城市的 4000余户家庭进行调查、研究。这项研究被列为“六·五”期间国家哲学社会科学规划的重点项目，其研究成果获得学术界及有关实际工作部门的好评。
